Bride’s story

Rebecca is a neuroscientist currently working on her PhD in biomedical science. She's spent her life on the coasts, going from California to Boston, and now New York. She adopted their first cat in college, and takes full responsibility for the eventual menagerie that will take over their home. When she's not in lab, she enjoys reading, knitting, dancing, baking ridiculous desserts, and messing with Josh. She promises not to toss any rings into Mount Doom if they go to New Zealand. Really.

Groom’s story

Josh is a chemical engineer whose journey has taken him around the world. He spent his early years in California, first in Long Beach and then in San Ramon, before finding himself in Singapore, where he spent five years before graduating high school. He enjoys playing music, video games, history, genre fiction, dancing and messing with Rebecca. He uses this variety of hobbies to stave off any impression that he is not, in fact, a nerd.

"Upon graduation, they moved to the urban jungle of Westchester County and began cohabitating with two monstrously oversized felines."

How We Met

Rebecca and Josh met at MIT, a world-class institution for crazy science people. After some time, they started dating and basically didn't stop. Upon graduation, they moved to the urban jungle of Westchester County and began cohabitating with two monstrously oversized felines.

This continued for a year or so, at which point they realized that they enjoyed cohabitating with two monstrously oversized felines and figured they might as well do so officially (with tax breaks as a bonus).
Also, they like cooking together.

The Proposal

Notwithstanding Shakespearean cliches about star crossed lovers, Rebecca and Josh discovered that a proposal while stargazing can work out quite well. It helps if you are on a lovely fall vacation in Ithaca and have just had a wonderfully romantic and absurdly delicious dinner. It may have been the food, the wine, or being able to actually see the constellations away from the city lights, but they realized that they wanted to be able to share moments like that for the rest of their lives.

The Wedding Party

Bride's Parents

  • Roger Cox

Roger is a software engineer, whose children think his coolest projects involved the LoTR movies. Rebecca has inherited his sense of humor, imparted through years of bad puns and gruesome stories told at the dinner table, much to Lisa and Josh's chagrin.

    Lisa Cox

Lisa is a former editor and educator, and the mother of Kristy, Rebecca, and Joey. She nurtured Rebecca's interest in science from a young age, aiding and abetting in various experiments that generally ended in small explosions.

    Groom's Parents

  • Joe Velson

Joe is the father of Joshua and Elliott, recently retired after a long career in container shipping and logistics. He enjoys sharing embarassing family photos and tinkering with electronics. He has also passed on an irrational love of applesauce to both of his children.

    Cecelia Velson

Cecelia is a former businesswoman and mother of Joshua and Elliott. She guided them through thick, thin, and even worse (i.e., puberty) while hopping between continents and generally convincing both of her children that she was superwoman.

    Bridesmaids

  • Hana Littleford

Hana is a graduate student pursuing her PhD in biology. She and Rebecca became partners in crime when they met in 9th grade and bonded over snarky British fantasy novels, and proceeded to terrorise innocent teachers with terrible puns for the next four years. After a brief period of separation during college, they reunited when Hana moved in with Rebecca and Josh for a couple of years, and promptly restarted the reign of terrible puns. Now living in New York City, she enjoys knitting, reading, snark, general nerdery, and reminding her cat that the feline is a demon incarnate.

    Kristy Kolence

Eldest sibling of the tribe. Freelance life coach and listener of woes. Teacher of all things inappropriate and fun. She has aided and abetted many curiosities of Rebecca and Joey, who are grateful to her for keeping them in one piece, not on fire, and out of trouble with Mom. (Hi Mom!)

    Emi Ferreira-Yang

Emi lived in the same dorm as Rebecca and Josh in undergrad and spent one glorious summer with Rebecca in Inman Square where they embarked on many culinary adventures (mostly into drinking beer and cider and making ice cream). They then spent many more hours in Random Hall cooking, playing with Kelvin, and trying to keep the building from falling down. Emi is a mechanical engineer who likes eating, biking (so she can eat more), reading, and playing games. And also talking about herself in the third person apparently. :D

    Groomsmen

  • Leon Jang

Leon is one of Josh's oldest friends and his best man. He has known Josh since his days at Singapore American School where they met in middle school. They've had many adventures trapezing through the concrete wilderness of downtown Singapore. But when Leon isn't trapezing, he's a product manager for a finance technology company. Currently, Leon resides in Boston with his three, yes three, cats.

    Elliott Velson

Elliott is someone. A bona fide human being, a person of value and Josh's brother.

    Joey Cox

Joe is Rebecca's notorious little brother who has always been in awe of his sister's abilities. He watched her toil away on the piano as a kid, begin research in high school, and spend college waking up in the middle of the night to cook hundreds of pancakes. While not pursuing his Masters in Computer Science, Joe enjoys exploring the KBBQ restaurants of Los Angeles and being terrible at tennis. Joe remains his sister's biggest fan.
